Rat thiostatin, is a serum protein with an apparent molecular weight of ~70 kDa. It is a cysteine proteinase inhibitor that is also a positive acute phase reactant. Its levels can increase as much as five-fold or more as a result of inflammation, tissue injury and disease. Thiostatin is also known as T-kininogen, 1-cysteine protease inhibitor and alpha-1 major acute phase protein It is purified using a combination of affinity, gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography steps.
